Assessments
In the assessment we look at how your brain is functioning, where your brain goes to retrieve certain information such as directions, lists, names, maths, we look at depression markers on 4 levels, your internal happiness, how traumas have impacted you throughout your life and what your coping strategies are from these. We look at your midline to see if you are using both hemispheres on a task, we check to see how busy your brain is and if stress/anxiety are an issue for you. We also look at concentration, focus and the quality of your memory for old age and the quality of your sleep as well as if your brain is locking into certain situations such as headaches or stress.
From this assessment, we are able to give you accurate feedback on your functioning, where you would encounter challenges. If you wanted to correct or improve any of these, we would be able to give you advice on how we can help and how many hours of brain training would be needed to address each imbalance. We need to see your brain in action first as each condition could be one imbalance or a combination of these. The cost of the assessment is R500.
Brain Training Sessions
We generally do the brain training in four hour sessions at a time, which we call intensives. During the intensives we use specific protocols designed to correct the imbalances that the assessment has revealed and we run these through the computer which is connected to the electrodes and to a set of headphones. Most people require twelve hours of training. This may vary depending on the individual. Children will need to do much shorter sessions and will need to come back more often to complete the twelve hours of training.
Brain training is very passive. Again the practitioner will place electrodes at various sites on the head. The electrodes are non-invasive and the process is pain free. You will be using headphones while you do various activities according to the training plan. The activities will vary from some eyes closed activities with visualisations, to watching dvds, to completing puzzles, to playing pacman, etc. The electrodes will be moved by the practitioner at the start of an activity. The headphones allow you to hear the sounds with which the brain is rewarded while you are performing the activities. Because your brain responds well to sound and it likes to be rewarded, it will seek to shift into the brain waves that bring about the rewards with greater frequency, and for progressively longer periods.
You may find that you fall asleep while training is happening and this is fine, as it will allow the brain to focus on what it is there to do – be trained. Some activities require you to be awake and your practitioner will let you know which ones they are.
How will I feel?
How you feel will vary from person to person. If you experience any kind of discomfort while you are training, please let your practitioner know immediately. You may feel energised afterwards or you may feel tired. Plan for a quieter time after each session. You will probably feel thirsty after training and hungry – your brain has been working very hard. Drink plenty of water and eat protein rich food. You may experience some headaches after a session and you can take painkillers for the headaches. You may also find that you are repeating old patterns. This may happen as the brain goes back to test what it used to do and then realises that it has learned a better way. It will soon shift to the new patterns that it has learned. You will continue to experience further changes for three weeks after your brain training is complete.
